About Tokyo movie, when even some indie films have become almost as predictable as blockbusters, you’ve got to revel in works of originality. The originality need not be wild; in fact, some restraint pulls it down to a human level, which is all to the good. “Tokyo!” which is a joint effort by three major directors, is a trio of short stories whose only commonality lies in its setting of one of the world’s great capital cities. While Beijing and Shanghai have made enormous strides (at least since I visited China twenty years ago only to find dilapidated hotels, a dismal array of department stores with indifferent sales clerks, and a genuine, third-world feeling), some view Tokyo as a city that has transcended tradition in its growth and dynamism. “Tokyo!”, then,is in part an ode to that metropolis.
